Gallen vs Browne Live

‘Circus of six rounds’ – Lucas Browne hits out at Paul Gallen as pair agree to April 14 bout

Lucas Browne has again launched a verbal attack on Paul Gallen after signing on for the pair’s upcoming fight.

After a long-winded war of words on social media, sparked by Browne calling Gallen out for fighting UFC fighters, the pair will finally enter the ring in April.

41-year-old Browne, who hasn’t fought since beating John Hopoate in November 2019, tweeted a photo of him signing the contract this week.

It’s expected the April 14 date will officially be confirmed in the coming weeks, after a verbal stand-off online between the pair.

Gallen had previously hit out at Browne about holding up the fight from going ahead due to a complication with promoters on his end.

“Lucas if you want the fight – I’ve got bigger fish to fry at the back end of the year, not bums like you – you need to sort yourself out and take a bit of a reduced fee. The fight is there for you. Stop carrying on like I’m the one dobbing it because it’s not me,” Gallen said in January.

The comments triggered an immediate response from Browne, who said it was Gallen who was stalling.

“I’ve agreed, you’ve agreed and everyone has f*****g agreed – all we have to do is get in there and fight,” Browne said on Instagram in January.

“It’s now up to the promoters to figure out what the f*** is going on.

“Let’s stop bullshitting around, let’s get in there and do it.”

And despite the two settling on a date, Browne has again been set off by an apparent request from Gallen’s team to shorten the bout.

“In typical Paul Gallen fashion, I’ve been informed by his team through my manager that he doesn’t want a ten-round fight anymore, he wants a six-round fight,” Browne said this week, after signing on the dotter line.

“So going from wanting to prove himself against an actual boxer, back to a circus of six rounds.”

Stacked NRL fight night card featuring Justis Huni set for Townsville in February

Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Josh Papalii are scheduled to headline a stacked NRL fight night card also featuring the third professional boxing match of Justis Huni’s career in Townsville on February 12 next year.

The proposed fight card includes scheduled bouts between Sam Thaiday and Reni Maitua, Justin Hodges and Sandor Earl, Scott Prince and Todd Carney and Matt Bowen and Craig Gower.

The event – which will be staged a week before the NRL All Stars match in Townsville – is being put on by Huni’s promoter Dean Lonergan, with an official announcement due later this week.

The proposed main event will see Radiers prop Papalii fight Melbourne Storm big man Asofa-Solomona, although the bout hasn’t been officially finalised yet.

Junior Paulo and Neville Costigan are set to face off in February.

Paramatta Eels powerhouse Junior Paulo has had a request to to skip his side’s pre-season training so he can prepare for an upcoming boxing bout denied.

The prop is set to don the gloves against former Raiders and QLD star Neville Costigan at the All Stars Rugby League fight night on February 12 in Townsville.

But despite his hopes that Eels coach Brad Arthur will allow him to skip pre-season to focus on the fight, the Eels on Sunday tweeted that he would return to pre-season training ‘as agreed’.

Junior Paulo vs Neville Costigan

Paulo had told The Daily Telegraph: “I am two weeks into a seven-week fight camp and I am hoping to continue the boxing training full-time.

“I have been training six days a week and I am hoping I will be able to continue instead of returning to the Eels pre-season. I haven’t heard back yet but I am hoping he (Brad) will be okay with it. I think he knows that the preparation I am doing for this fight will have me coming back at my best for the season.”

But the Eels responded with a public statement on Twitter, writing: “The Eels and Junior Paulo have always maintained that his first priority is to be ready for our trial against the Panthers in February.

“All of his training is being monitored and overseen by the Eels high performance department to make sure his [sic] ready for the 2021 season.

“Junior will be returning to pre-season training in January as agreed.”

Paulo had claimed that boxing training would have him fitter than ever for the new NRL season.

“I am training harder than ever and it will be the best preparation I can have for the 2021 season,” he said.

“The fittest I have ever been is before my fight in 2016 and I respond well to the different style training. I think Brad knows that this type of training will have me at my best for the start of the season.”

It will be just the 27-year-old’s second fight – the first was a loss to Paul Gallen in 2016 – but Paulo has signalled his intent to become a full-time boxer once his NRL career concludes.

“I have given it a bit of thought and I would like to take it up full time one day. League is all I have ever known and boxing is something I definitely want to pursue once I finish football.”

In what would be another juicy all-NRL clash, Paulo also said he’d like to face off with Maroons star Jai Arrow in the ring.

Mark Hunt v Paul Gallen, Tim Tszyu: How to watch, live stream, date, fight card, Main Event

Australia’s biggest selling boxing PPV figures can finally be revealed, and there could be a new No.1 come Wednesday. Here’s how to watch the fight card.

The Sydney Superfight is set to break the all-time Australian pay-per-view record set by Anthony Mundine and Danny Green in 2006.

The double billing of Tim Tszyu’s world title elimination fight against Bowyn Morgan, and heavyweight showdown between league legend Paul Gallen against UFC giant Mark Hunt, is on track to becoming the biggest-selling boxing event in Australian history by surpassing 200,000 purchases.

The list of top PPV boxing events in Australia can finally be revealed, and it is a remarkable prospect that the son of Kostya Tszyu and a former NSW State of Origin captain can combine to outsell not only Mundine and Green, but pugilist superstars Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in this country.

It’s understood that pre-sales for the Sydney Superfight have already surpassed Tszyu’s previous bout against Jeff Horn, an event that stunned Main Event officials by outselling both Horn-Mundine and Horn-Pacquiao.

No doubt COVID-19 played a role, with a number of sports and major global events cancelled amid lockdowns, increasing the appetite for live content, however Tszyu’s stunning performance also catapulted him into next phase of PPV stardom.

No Limit Promotions, who promote Tszyu and Gallen, then made the decision to put both men on the same card at Bankwest Stadium rather than on separate events, and it has been a masterstroke.

No Limit chief executive, the former NRL star George Rose, was in the Sydney Football Stadium on May 17, 2006, when Mundine defeated Green, and this will be the first stadium boxing event in the city since that famous night when the PPV record was set and remains unsurpassed.

“We’d love to break that record, it would be huge for us,” Rose told The Daily Telegraph.

“If we don’t do it now, we’ll be looking for it in the next one. We’ll keep trying to chase those titles from our side of the fence, that’s what we want to do.

“And for Tim, once he fights for a world title and becomes a world champion, he’s going to have that platform for everyone else to be a part of as well.

“It is epic, we went to Mundine-Green and we were kids then, watching the fight, we had tickets in the stands but we managed to jump the fence to get down on the grass.

Biggest PPV boxing events in Australia

1. Anthony Mundine vs Danny Green, May 17, 2006, Sydney. PPV buys: 200,000

2. Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao, May 2, 2015, Las Vegas. PPV buys: 195,000

3. Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor, August 26, 2017, Nevada. PPV buys: 190,000

4. Anthony Mundine vs Danny Green II, February 3, 2017, Adelaide. PPV buys: 100,000

5. Tim Tszyu vs Jeff Horn, August 26, 2020, Townsville. PPV buys: 94,000

6. Anthony Mundine vs Jeff Horn, November 30, 2018. PPV buys: 73,000

7. Jeff Horn vs Manny Pacquiao, July 2, 2017, Brisbane. PPV buys: 63,000

“As boxing fans as kids, that was one of the coolest nights we were ever at in Sydney.

“The fact we’re hosting the next stadium show in Sydney, it’s surreal.

“We’ve lined up the card to the point where every fight is going to be entertaining – we’ve got characters here in Australian boxing, quality fighters.”

Adding to the magnitude of the event is the WBO’s announcement that super-welterweight champion Patrick Teixeira, of Brazil, must lock in his title defence by January 6.

Teixeira can’t get out of Brazil due to COVID, and is unlikely to be able to secure travel to fight against No.1 contender Brian Castano within three weeks.

Gallen will fight Hunt at Sydney on December 16.

NRL great Paul Gallen has revealed his struggle to find sparring partners willing to help him prepare for his fight against UFC icon Mark Hunt.

Gallen will fight Hunt at Sydney’s Bankwest Stadium on December 16. The former NSW State of Origin captain is already dealing with the effects of a torn bicep, hoping that he will get about one month’s worth of sparring before the heavyweight bout.

Gallen vs Hunt

Gallen (9-0-1, 5 KOs) told Wide World of Sports that he’d only just managed to assemble adequate sparring partners, given Hunt’s standing in the fight game. The ‘Super Samoan’, the UFC’s former walk-off KO king, is widely revered.

“That’s been a bit of an issue this time actually, getting sparring partners. Because he’s such a big name and such a big legend, there’s a lot of guys who are reluctant to help you train because of who he is,” Gallen said.

“I can understand part of it but at the end of the day, there’s only a limited number of heavyweights in Sydney. Everyone sort of helps everyone where they can and if you ended up fighting one day, you end up fighting.

“But it was a bit of a struggle at the start to find sparring partners. We ended up picking up some and we should be OK going forward.”

AU – Boxing: Mark Hunt vs. Paul Gallen fight scheduled for December 16 at Bankwest Stadium

Mark Hunt’s legal stoush with the UFC is far from over after he provided an update on the situation on Wednesday.

Hunt fronted the media as part of the announcement of a huge bout with Paul Gallen at Bankwest Stadium in December.

It will feature in a double-header boxing extravaganza co-headlined by Tim Tszyu’s fight with New Zealander Bowyn Morgan.

The boxing ring and will fight NRL hardman Gallen on December 16 at Bankwest Stadium, on the undercard of Tim Tszyu’s bout with Bowyn Morgan, however the event’s promoters have been warned not to use any footage of Hunt fighting in the UFC in their promotional material.

Hunt’s case was that the UFC knowingly withheld Lesnar’s positive test so the fight could proceed, and therefore “aided and abetted” his battery, and so sought Lesnar’s $US2.5 million from the bout.

He also wants the UFC’s contracting system that pays fighters a smaller percentage of revenue than boxing overturned.
